SKALE already has a token (SKL) but they're running a loyalty program called Surge that's clearly building user data before something drops. The $49.5M in funding from serious names like Multicoin and HashKey means they have runway and legitimacy. They've been live since 2020, so this isn't some untested protocol hoping to ship someday.

The zero gas fee angle is actually their killer feature. Every SKALE Chain operates without gas costs, which makes it perfect for gaming and high-frequency dApps. They're not competing with general L2s — they're going after specific verticals where transaction costs kill user experience. The multi-chain architecture where each dApp gets its own chain is unique in the modular space. Most competitors share resources; SKALE gives you dedicated performance.

The Surge program launched with a points system and referral mechanics, which historically signals future rewards. They're already tracking wallet activity, social engagement, and referrals. Given SKL exists, this could be a separate governance token, NFT benefits, or SKL rewards for early adopters. The confidence level is confirmed because the program is live and explicitly called a "loyalty program" — they're not hiding what they're building toward.

SKALE runs its own network of interconnected L1 chains, not as a Layer 2 on Ethereum. Each SKALE Chain is EVM-compatible and operates independently while connecting to the broader SKALE Network. This isn't the typical L2 ecosystem where you're farming alongside other rollups. Projects building on SKALE include gaming dApps, NFT marketplaces, and AI agent platforms that need zero gas fees and instant finality.

The ecosystem is more vertical than horizontal. Instead of competing with Arbitrum or Optimism for general DeFi, SKALE targets specific use cases where gas costs are dealbreakers. Gaming chains like those used by CryptoBlades and other web3 games run on dedicated SKALE Chains. The multi-chain structure means you're not just farming one protocol — you're positioning yourself in an entire network that could reward early users across all chains. If you've farmed other modular blockchain projects like Celestia or Fuel, SKALE's approach is different because each chain is fully functional, not just a data availability layer.

The main risk is reward structure uncertainty. SKALE already has SKL token, so this loyalty program could distribute anything from existing tokens (inflationary) to a new governance token to just NFT badges with no financial value. The program doesn't explicitly promise token rewards, which is both good (legal safety) and risky (no guarantees).

SKL token unlocks and vesting schedules from the 2020 launch are mostly complete, but check if team tokens are still vesting. The project is legitimate with major backers and a live mainnet, so rug risk is minimal. The bigger concern is effort-to-reward ratio. If 500,000 users farm points and the reward pool is small, your months of daily tasks might earn $50. Points programs can also change rules mid-campaign — reducing point values, adding new requirements, or filtering accounts retroactively. SKALE's team hasn't specified snapshot dates or total reward allocation, so you're farming blind on value. Time commitment is low (5 minutes daily), so it's worth farming, but don't expect life-changing amounts unless you're early and consistent.
